Union minister and BJP’s chief strategist, Amit Shah, announced today in Kolkata that the BJP is set on forming a government in Bengal in 2026. “Mamata didi celebrated when our seats reduced in the Lok Sabha polls, but let’s not forget—we are the party that only had two seats when we set out to abrogate Article 370,” he remarked. Shah accused the state of enabling “state-sponsored infiltration” and emphasized, “The only way to halt this is by electing the BJP in 2026. Instead of Rabindrasangeet, Bengal today hears the sound of bombs.”
Predicting a decisive win, he added, “In 2026, BJP will form a government with a two-thirds majority.”
Shah’s statement comes amid widespread discontent following the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. This incident has sparked significant anti-government sentiment in Kolkata and other areas, as civil society joined junior doctors in protests against both corruption and the state’s handling of crime.
Although the protests were officially paused after a meeting between the doctors and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, tensions remain high. The BJP, mostly in the background of what was officially an apolitical protest, has reportedly seen some alignment with the Left in pushing for accountability. There is now speculation that the BJP may leverage the protest’s momentum to challenge the Trinamool government in upcoming elections.
Amit Shah also cited law-and-order issues in Bengal, referencing actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty’s claim that Trinamool cadres have allegedly prevented BJP supporters from voting.
